In today's post, I will share with you the journey of one of my students, Marcia Brown, who successfully completed my online shoemaking course, and now she has launched a private label shoes brand-"Marcia Brown Footwear".
The shoe-making knowledge and skills she acquired helped her successfully manufacture her own shoes. She creates her own prototypes, chooses the best quality materials and controls her footwear brand production.
Marcia Brown had never had any shoemaking experience before starting to learn shoemaking in my online shoemaking course, and now she owns her own shoe brand.
As a beginner in shoemaking, it’s always difficult to take the first step, but if you’ve heard of Marcia Brown’s experience (you’ll see a full interview at the end of this article), you’ll see a way to make your own The path of shoes even launched its own shoe brand.
The first step for beginners in shoemaking
So how do you start learning to make shoes?
For Marcia Brown, it took her 6 months to gather the courage to actually practice shoemaking and soiled her hands, so she only watched my shoemaking class before that.
The most difficult and important step in the shoemaking process is the first step.
This is not rocket science, shoemaking is a craft, and applying everything you learn will not happen before you start doing it.
As Marcia said in an interview, you just need to do it—"Go for it!"
You need to understand how simple it is. When you practice, you will do more and you will gain experience. When you gain experience, you will do better, and every time you make progress as a beginner in shoemaking, it will become easier.
Note: One of the obstacles may also be collecting shoe-making tools and materials, because people think you should have many different shoe-making tools. Obviously, you can start making shoes with minimal tools and materials. If this is your case, please check out this article "Beginner's Shoemaking Tools and Materials: The Definitive Guide for 2019".
Student--First pair of shoes--Marcia-02
This is the first pair of shoes (flat ballet shoes) made by Marcia.
You can see in this picture that this piece is not perfect, this is how it looked when you first started making shoes.
-The throat line is not ideally curved, so the seam looks uneven
-The heel surface needs to be smoother and shiny
* The sole treatment is great (very great, Marcia)!
Despite these tiny flaws, these flat-soled ballet shoes are real shoes, I guess they were worn by Marcia. I think this is very important for any shoe maker, because all these mistakes that are natural to any shoe maker will be resolved in every pair of shoes.
Having said that, let's take a look at these black flat ballet shoes. This is also the flat ballet shoes Marcia made while practicing and gaining experience. Can you see the difference?

This is a completely different story. These flat ballet shoes look cute.
student-
Marcia focuses on making shoes for people with foot problems. In the interview, she explained our huge demand for this kind of shoes in the luxury footwear sector.
With this in mind, Marcia makes shoes for herself and her sister. This is the starting point——
"I can make shoes for others."
Follow the shoemaking procedures, from simple shoemaking to advanced
I keep emphasizing the importance of order in shoemaking learning. If you are a beginner in shoemaking, if you are just starting to learn to make shoes, what you do first is very important.
You can ignore my suggestion and jump up to make boots, sneakers or anything else, but this will only affect your progress in making your own shoes.
In the interview, Marcia told me that she just decided to make all the shoes in accordance with the shoe-making plan of my online course. In the end, she understood how beneficial to her progress in shoemaking that learning different shoemaking techniques and different methods to freely make any shoes she wanted.
Take a look at the different shoe types she made: high heels, high heels, slingback high heels, Muller sandals

Marcia Brown's progress in shoemaking is a perfect example of my creation of such a program.
Beginners have 0 knowledge and no experience, so the correct order of learning will be the basis for your professional production of shoes, which means that shoes are not only good-looking but also comfortable.
If it is the 1Year Shoemaking project, I will take you from the basic footwear structure (such as flat ballet shoes) to the entire process of making 15 kinds of shoes, and provide you with the most difficult type of footwear (such as English trim Shoes) skills.
..... Or my beginner plan, you will get the correct basics and skills to make classic footwear (flat ballet shoes, high heels, Oxford shoes, derby shoes), giving you the opportunity to create more by yourself.
We focus on the order of learning because we focus on results.
I don't want to teach you DIY projects, my purpose is not to "follow" classes.
I want to give you the freedom, skills and knowledge to make the shoes you want.
Shoemaking students launch shoe brand
This is the right way to understand what type of shoes you wish to produce as a business.
Marcia focuses on the niche market of "shoes for people with non-standard feet", focusing on the use of high-quality materials to make luxury shoes.
She decided that the footwear she was going to make was a sneaker for that niche market, but it was important to remember that she made this decision after making all other footwear types.
She understands what footwear she can make in the best way
She wanted to design shoes and had a good idea,
She has the most freedom in making footwear.
What do i mean? What are sports shoes?
This sneaker is based on two footwear structures: Oxford shoes and Derby shoes.
So even before she started making sneakers, she had the experience and knowledge of how to make other patterns, believe it or not, but this is the most important part of sneakers.
Now, you can see her beautiful sneaker design below.

Smart shoe
I make shoes, I design shoes, and my time is very precious. So my method of making shoes is what I call "smart shoes". I will not delve into it, you can read the full article about it "Smart Shoemaking: How to switch from a beginner to making your own shoes"
One of the main ideas of this method is to create a basic model, work, and do a good job of the basic model.
Now, when you have this good basic pattern, you can and should reuse it for other shoe designs you want to make. This is how I work and how I teach students.
I am very happy to hear Marcia say that she uses this method in her work.
This is a bullet-proven system and we should all use it.
in conclusion
If you want to learn how to make shoes and want to make comfortable, hard-wearing shoes, not just a DIY project, then you will need to do it yourself.
Anyone who is willing to learn and work, practice and hone shoemaking skills can do it.
I’m very proud of what Marcia Brown has achieved and where she is going next, and it’s important to share this with you.
If she can do it, so can you.
You have a problem with your feet, learn how to make shoes for yourself,
You consider your own shoe series, shoe business, learn craftsmanship, make your own prototype, and control what you are making.
It's all up to you, and it's feasible.
Quoting Marcia's "Just do it", take the first step in making shoes.
This is a long interview. Marcia shared a lot of great suggestions. I am 100% sure to help each of you.
Watch the interview and comment to let Marcia know and appreciate her work.

The basic model of shoemaking is the first thing you need to master. When we are making shoes, the pattern construction of almost every shoe type is based on this basic pattern.
It can be seen that mastering the current basic mode is very important for making beautiful and comfortable shoes.
What are the basic shoe types for shoemaking?
The basic shoe shape is an exact replica of the last you used to make your shoes.
Now, the basic pattern of the shoe is very important when making shoes, because you will use this basic pattern to develop all other shoe components (upper, lining). Now, if you want to know the importance of basic patterns, shoes manufacturer.
Round toe last
It contains certain points and lines and a long-lasting margin.
First-Basic-Shoe Pattern
Lasting allowance for shoemaking
This is an additional material (fabric or leather-depending on the shoe you are making) that we need to add to the feather line of the last in order to attach this margin to the insole.
This will allow us to close the upper around the last during the shoemaking process.
If you want to know more, you can check this article "Continuing Allowance in the Shoe Industry"
How do we make the basic patterns of shoes in shoemaking.
1. Cover the outside of the shoe last with textured paper
2. Draw the important lines and points needed for the composition of different shoe types, and apply the design of the shoes we want to make (there are two methods for composition)
3. Paste the textured paper pattern on the cardboard
4. Cut out the same pattern from paper A4.
Why do I need to use A4 paper here? We need it to check our basic pattern. I have written an article about the use of paper in shoemaking, so if you want to know more about it, please check this article
"Save money on leather and make shoes with paper patterns [video tutorial]"
5. Put it on the shoe last to check its correctness, and there is a feather line on the inside of the shoe last
6. Transfer all the corrected paper patterns to the new cardboard
2 How to make the sole pattern
There are two main methods for making shoe patterns. They all work well, but one of them has almost no advantage. First, let us describe these two methods of making shoe patterns.
Make the first basic pattern and the second basic pattern
This is how I make shoes and teach courses.
-We made the first basic mode, which is exactly the mode you will learn in the following tutorials.
-Then we made another basic pattern following the same steps used when making the first basic pattern, but we also drew the design of the shoe we want to make.
-This is the second basic mode.
-Using the second basic pattern, we created all the parts and patterns of the shoe design.
Flat ballet shoes in different designs
Only make one basic pattern
-Follow the same steps we used to make the first basic pattern to make the basic pattern (see the tutorial later)
-Before removing the masking paper pattern, draw the shoe design first
-Use this basic pattern in conjunction with the shoe design to develop all the parts and details of the shoe
Oxford shoe design
Advantages of making the first and second basic patterns
If you use my method, you will save your time and work smarter.
why?
When you make the first basic pattern without applying any shoe design, you will check it with paper and get a 100% correct pattern.
Then you can design any shoe type (of course, use the same last), except ballet and high heels.
If you still don’t have any lasts and don’t know the correct last size to check, please be sure to read this article
"How to measure your foot size [order the right shoe last]"
If you are not sure which shoe last type is needed to make the specific shoe last you want to make, please check this article on different shoe last types for use in the shoe industry "Shoe Last [The Definitive Guide 2019]"
You can stick the masking tape pattern with the shoe design on this copy of the checked shoe pattern-the first basic pattern, you must already have the correct shoe pattern, no matter what it is: Derby shoes, Oxford shoes, soft Leather shoes, boots, etc.
Sneakers-shoes
If you will use the second method, you will draw the shoe design and use it to make this specific shoe type.
Then, you will need to make all the other shoe shapes you want to use the same last again and again.
Draw shoe pattern
If you want to learn about the types of perfect lasts needed to make 10 different shoes, please check this article "Learn the perfect lasts for making shoes [1 shoe last = 10 shoe shapes] ”
So please watch this tutorial to learn how to make basic shoe shapes and work smartly to save you time in making shoes.
Now, as a good example of my method, learn how it works in shoemaking, such as Oxford shoes.
How to use the basic mode to speed up the shoemaking process
Today I will show you a quick and easy mode of making a solution. This new method will save you time dealing with shoe patterns, because you will focus on one main part-the basic pattern.
Usually in all of my online shoemaking courses, we make the basic patterns and all the other parts needed. This is how it should work, but today I will teach you how to focus all modes in a new way.
How do you usually construct shoe shapes?
Using the example of this oxford shoe, you will see and understand how each step of making this pattern works
oxfrod's shoe design
1. The first basic pattern
Shoe Type-Construction 002
This is a clean pattern, without your design, just to make it fit the shoe last perfectly.
2. Complete the basic mode.
Basic shoe type
After checking the first basic pattern, you can transfer the shoe design there.
3. Add a folded toe cap pattern
Now, shoemaking has the correct folding method. If you want to learn "How to fold the upper?! Shoemaking steps", please be sure to read this article.
Toe shoe type
4. Patterns with folded and underlined stitching on the upper

5. The pattern of underlined seams and folds

6. The pattern on the back part is folded.
If you want to learn how to create a neat back seam, be sure to check out this article "What a shoemaker does to achieve a perfect back seam"

7. Shoe tongue pattern with underline stitching
Shoe pattern on the tongue
A new model construction method
1 The first basic mode (just like the previous method)
Shoe Type-Construction 002
2 Complete basic mode
Basic shoe type
3. Competitive basic pattern, all seam allowances for every detail are on top.
New basic model construction
For this complete basic pattern, you will add lines for every detail (toe cap, upper, etc.), all necessary seam allowances. All the design, details and parts of the model will be concentrated in one place.
After marking all the seam allowances for each shoe component on the basic pattern, you will get a complete map and a guide for each component required for the shoe.
in conclusion
The advantage of this method is that when you create a pattern with specific details, you don't need to think about how many millimeters you need to add to the seam allowance every time and adjust it every time you use the compass.
In this way, you will save time and work faster. This is especially useful if you need to make many different patterns in a short period of time.
On the other hand, this method can be very messy and not so clean. Concentrating too many lines, designs, and seam allowances for each part will require your full attention. So use this mode very carefully, here is a quick tip.
In order to avoid confusion with so many marks on the basic pattern, mark them with different colors, such as blue fold marks, red marks underlines, etc.
