Quoddy is also one of the few brands to keep the shoe industry alive in New England, especially Maine.
The company is best known for its hand-sewn moccasins, private label shoe manufacturer, and manufactures shoes using methods dating back centuries to local Passamaquadi Americans.
Quoddy Moccasins was founded in Portland in 1947 by Anne and Jack Spiegel. In the 1970s, it ran into financial trouble and was sold and resold.
Kevin Shorey and his wife Kirsten bought the company back in 1995 and rebranded the brand as Maine-based Quoddy Footwear LLC three years later. While not affiliated with the founding family, Kevin's great-grandfather, grandfather and father were all shoemakers.
Due to extensive offshoring in the 70s, Kevin admits that none of their shoes are made entirely in the US, as it is impossible to source all parts in the country.
"Some of the soles are made in Italy, the laces are made in Mexico, and the leather is from Chicago." However, they continue to operate in the US to ensure the quality of their products.
Every pair of Quoddy shoes, from penny loafers, boat shoes, chukka boots, oxfords, blucher shoes, is crafted in their signature moccasin style.
While most of Quoddy shoes are made to order, you can find some off-the-shelf styles at Matches Fashion, Mr. Porter, and Leffot.
We work on the wooden bench with leather, needles, thread and some basic tools. We stitch, coax and embellish these humble materials into beautiful footwear.
Our method goes back centuries to the local Passamaquadi. Designed to support your foot comfortably. Designed to last a lifetime, as they can be renewed by the same hands that created them.
Here, these skills are passed down from generation to generation. Here, we stubbornly refuse to trade human touch for industrial efficiency. Here, the output is measured in tens instead of thousands.
The 19th century saw the birth of the New England shoe industry. But today, Alden remains one of the few remaining factories, a private label shoe manufacturer.
Founded by Charles H. Alden in Middleboro, Massachusetts, the Alden Shoe Company has been making shoes since 1884. It is a traditional family business with around 100 workers who are part of the second or third generation of the family.
Although the Great Recession and overseas manufacturing took a toll on New England's shoe companies, Alden still operates in Massachusetts to this day.
Despite the decline of the American footwear industry, the company's high-quality dress shoes and orthopaedic and medical shoe designs helped Alden thrive.
Alden sources leather materials from small tanneries in Europe and the United States. It is known for using the shell Cordovan from the Horween Leather Company, an American company founded in Chicago, Illinois in 1905.

Women's plus size shoes exclusively manufactured by Cinderella Shoes and exclusively distributed worldwide.
While a lot of glamour can be found on the 2020 runway shows, the only fashion trends that seem to take off this year revolve around casual wear and private label shoe manufacturers. It's certainly no surprise after people across the globe have been forced to endure months of lockdown, so we've turned to cashmere and tracksuits instead of the high-octane eveningwear we've seen in the collection.
However, there seems to be one accessory that counteracts all of this: Cinderella-inspired shoes.
The trend was undoubtedly started by footwear designer Amina Muaddi, who was desperate to see her lavish party shoes fly off the shelves and her collections sold out during the height of the lockdown. The designer's signature pumps appear to be "pandemic-proof," as Business of Fashion puts it, and women are snapping up the glamorous heels despite having nowhere to wear them.
Of course, avid designer status is key to success, but so is the fairytale element of Muaddi's shoes, which includes some "Cinderella's glass slippers"-inspired designs, and she's not alone in capitalizing on that aesthetic.
From mid-tier brands like By Far and Cult Gaia to luxury footwear heavyweights like Christian Louboutin and Gianvito Rossi, the sheer party shoe covered in trim is undoubtedly one of the year's most prominent footwear trends.
While it might not be the best lock-in shoe, it's a style well worth investing in for the year ahead—and even if you're just dancing in your own living room, it's the best Christmas party accessory.
Glass slippers are fictional shoes belonging to Cinderella, first used in the 1950 film of the same name. It was created by her fairy godmother using magic for the royal ball. It also played a major role in the film's second sequel, Cinderella III: A Turn of Time. Glass slippers are known as Cinderella's iconic item. It's also the only one to find the princess, Cinderella and Anastasia (the original) in the second sequel, because of the magic of her evil stepmother.
